Advanced Anti-Collision Systems

Advanced Anti-Collision Systems from RMA

On a site where two or more cranes share a working radius, or where a jib passes over a road, a public building, a power line or a neighbouring site, a limiting measure has to be defined in the siting plan, and a computerised anti-collision system is one of the accepted ways to do it. RMA markets and installs advanced anti-collision systems in Israel: computerised limiting systems for collision prevention and zoning on tower cranes. The systems we install have been tested and approved by the Standards Institution of Israel and the Ministry of Communications, and operate on a frequency allocated to RMA, which prevents interference from other systems on site.

The regulatory basis

The siting and operation of overlapping cranes are covered by directive no. 567226 of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration at the Ministry of Labor, "Siting and operation of tower cranes in extreme conditions" (published 1 February 2017), alongside the Safety at Work Regulations (Tower Cranes), 5727-1966. The directive sets the conditions for siting and operating cranes that overlap or work near sensitive areas, and recognises computerised limiting systems as a means of preventing collisions. The limiting measure is defined in the siting plan, before the cranes start working in overlap; the choice of measure is the responsibility of the main contractor. The information on this page is general and is not legal, engineering or safety advice.

Three systems, three roles

  • Anti-collision between cranes: the systems on the overlapping cranes communicate with each other and calculate the position of each crane's jib and trolley in real time. The crane stops only when necessary, so work can continue in the overlap zone without locking out whole sectors.

  • Zoning ("smart site"): forbidden zones are defined outside the site boundary, such as roads, public buildings, power lines and neighbouring sites. The operator can save a point and return the crane to it.

  • Smart wind vane: wind monitoring, for a data-based decision on when to stop work in strong wind.

In addition: dedicated cameras, and a site-manager view of crane activity with reports by various parameters.

How it works in 4 steps

  1. Overlap check: you send us a site plan with the crane positions, or we prepare it as part of our siting consultancy, and we mark overlap zones and forbidden zones.

  2. System design: which system on each crane, sensors, communication between the cranes and the site display.

  3. Installation, calibration and testing on site by an RMA technician, before work in overlap begins.

  4. Service: the systems are maintained by the same team that services about 500 cranes across Israel.

Why through RMA

The system comes with the approvals of the Standards Institution of Israel and the Ministry of Communications and a frequency allocated to RMA, and is installed both on our rental fleet (190 tower cranes) and on cranes owned by clients. Installation and service are provided by our team of 60 professionals: engineers, mechanics, electricians, technicians and consultants, who know both the crane and the system.

RMA is one of Israel's longest-established and largest tower crane companies: rental, service, import and spare parts under one roof, since 1981.
